Around one hundred homes (lying on nine streets) will need those repairs because they are sending raw sewage into Rivière des Prairies instead of the area's water treatment plant, due to incorrectly installed pipes. The repairs could end up costing up to half a million dollars, a bill which will be paid by Montreal taxpayers. The homeowners themselves will have limited liability; they will only be accountable if the repairs exceed $5,000 for a given household, in which case the owner will have to dish out the exceeding amount. City officials estimate that the $5,000 mark should cover the majority of cases. The repairs are scheduled to kick off in October, and could take until next spring to complete.
