Canal Real Estate Boom

Lachine Canal

The once industrial sector along the western part of the Lachine Canal is now becoming a real estate haven, as condo projects have recently been moving westward.  The newest addition is Le Portail du Canal, a 120-unit project situated at the intersection of rue St-Patrick and avenue de l’Eglise.  Built by Harcon Developments, the steel and concrete condo building is attracting cyclists, joggers and rowers, who will enjoy the proximity to the bicycle lanes and rowing docks.

The units are very well priced, ranging from $96k for a small studio to around $250k for a 3-bedroom.  This will draw anyone trying to buy in the nearby, trendier strip around Marché Atwater, but can’t afford it.

The entire area has been improving since 1993, when the canal was reopened to pleasure boats.  Condo projects have been popping up over the years, the bike path is very popular, and various shops and services have been opening up.  The trend is very likely to continue, heading westward along the canal.
