Montreal Borough/Municipality Pages

Le Sud-Ouest

Overview

Le Sud-Ouest (Southwest in English) is a borough in the city of Montreal, with a population of approximately seventy thousand.  The borough is located southwest of downtown (hence its name), and is bordered by Westmount to the north and Verdun to the south.

The borough, which spans an area of just under 16 km2, is divided into two districts, each made up of several smaller sub-boroughs:

  • Saint-Paul–Ville-Émard
Saint-Paul is one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city, dating back to the early 18th century.
  • Saint-Henri–Petite-Bourgogne–Pointe-Saint-Charles
During the industrial revolution, Little Burgundy was the site of many industries, from railway yards to steel plants.

Le Sud-Ouest borough started out as an Irish Catholic and industrial hub grouped around the Lachine Canal.  More recently, many of the factory buildings have been converted into residential and/or commercial lofts as certain parts of the Lachine Canal have gone through major revitalization.

Landmarks

  • Lachine Canal
The canal has been designated a National Historic Site of Canada.  Its shores are full of recreational facilities such as parks, bicycle paths and pleasure boating.
  • Atwater Market
The Atwater Market, open since 1933, is a farmer's market located in Saint-Henri.  It offers a wide selection of fresh produce such as fruit, vegetables, cheese, meat, fish and even wine.
  • Angrignon Park
Named after JB Arthur Angrignon, former city councilor for Cote Saint-Paul, the park spans a 97-hectare slab of land featuring 10 km of walking and cross-country skiing trails.
