Saint-Laurent

Overview

Saint-Laurent, also known as Ville-Saint-Laurent, is a former city on the island of Montreal.  On January 1st, 2002, it was merged into the city of Montreal, forming one of its largest boroughs.

Ville-Saint-Laurent spans an area of 43,000 kilometers square, housing a population of around eighty-five thousand.

History

Saint-Laurent was known historically as a college town.  Its ethnic diversity is reflected by its English and French CEGEPs.

Districts

The Saint-Laurent borough is divided into two districts:

  • Norman-McLaren
    Named after the Scottish-born Canadian film director and animator (1914-1987).
  • Côte-de-Liesse
    Gained its name officially in 1954.

Landmarks

  • Cégep de Saint-Laurent
    Saint-Laurent's French CEGEP, founded in 1847.  The Du Collège metro station is named after it.  Its campus houses the Saint-Laurent Hockey Rink, an indoors civic facility.

  • Decarie Hot Dog
    Voted as the best hot dog in Montreal by the Gazette in the 80s.
  • Raymond Bourque Arena
    Indoor municipal hockey rink, named after the NHL icon.
  • Saint-Laurent Museum of Art
    Situated on the campus of Cégep de Saint-Laurent.
  • Vanier College
    Named after Georges Vanier, a former Canadian Governor General, Vanier College is Saint-Laurent's English language CEGEP, founded in 1970.  With a student body of over 6,000 students, Vanier College is the CEGEP system's second largest English institution.
