What is a Home Alarm System? An alarm system uses sensors, located in strategic spots around your home, connected to a central control post. These sensors detect motion and sounds produced by breaking an entry, upon which they will emit a loud alert signal and/or notify a police station nearby. System Types & Options Alarm systems come in a wide variety of types, technologies, prices and payment options. For instance, they can be purchased or leased. They can detect smoke, natural gas, carbon monoxide or temperature variations. Other systems serve a single purpose like burglar detection or fire protection. A careful assessment of one’s needs against what is offered is a must before opting for a particular package. At the least, a basic system comprising of sensors for two doors will cost around $400. Add to that at least $25 a month for the central monitoring service, if needed. Home security systems are either connected using cables or wireless. Wireless products are cheaper and much easier to install. However, because of their complexity, they tend to be more sensitive, which increases the risk of launching false alarms. A home owner is advised to take note of this, as certain municipalities charge fines for false alarms, so a careful weighting of the tradeoff is in order. Alarm Systems & Home Insurance Installing an alarm system can reduce a home’s insurance premiums by up to 25 percent. Consult your insurance agent or company before choosing and contacting a home security professional. Your agent should be able to recommend an appropriate company and package. It is recommended to opt for a supplier that is a member of CANASA (Canadian Security Association).
